Offshore wind industry 'could support thousand of jobs'

Contractors working in the offshore wind industry could be among those to benefit from thousands of new job opportunities over the next ten years.

Up to 70,000 "high value" jobs in manufacturing, research, operation and engineering could be supported by the £75 billion industry by 2020, according to the government.

The comment follows the granting of new "Round Three" rights in nine coastal zones throughout the UK.

Energy companies now have the rights to develop "the biggest expansion of wind energy ever seen in the world", after The Crown Estate granted its approval.

Prime minister Gordon Brown said: "The offshore wind industry is at the heart of the UK economy’s shift to low carbon and could be worth £75 billion and support up to 70,000 jobs by 2020.

"This announcement will make a significant and practical contribution to reducing our CO2 emissions and the Government will work with developers and The Crown Estate to support the growing offshore wind industry and help remove barriers to rapid development."
