Pupils prepare for oil industry roles

Children from 33 secondary schools in and around Aberdeen and the surrounding county are taking part in the online PetroChallenge, competition backed by Opito, the Oil and Gas Academy for training new offshore industry entrants. Pupils will take part in the event, hosted by Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen at the beginning of September, with the support of educational sponsor Simprentis, with each school team competing to maximise their profit from directly investing in their own oil and gas assets or in opportunities offered by other teams. Each team will play the complete range of roles in offshore exploration, from bidding for exploration licences through to studying seismic surveys and bidding for rigs, contracting suppliers and choosing where drilling to drill.

David Doig, chief executive of the Oil and Gas Academy, said the competition will reflect all the skills necessary for success in the real oil and gas world. “In order to succeed pupils need to acquire an understanding of the dynamics of the oil and gas industry, have an ability to solve complex challenges, work together as a team and be able to collaborate with others,” he said. He says the competition is also a key for stimulating the next generation of individuals who will drive the offshore industry forward.

Success in the first rounds will see finalists travel to London later this year to compete against other schools internationally, from the Faroe Islands, Norway, Greenland, Denmark, Canada and the US. Scottish finalists missed out on the top title last year by being beaten by a team from Iceland.
