Eneco offshore wind farm construction work draws nearer

A location has been found for a proposed wind farm off the south coast of England, which could eventually aid civil engineering recruitment.

Last year, the Crown Estate granted Dutch energy firm Eneco a 279-square mile area to the south of Devon and Hampshire from which to choose the site for its offshore wind farm to be situated.

Eneco has now selected a site within the northern part of this area where it intends to undertake construction work on this new facility, which will cover 76 square miles and have a capacity of between 900 and 1,200 megawatts.

Project director Chris Sherrington commented: "This is an important milestone in the lifetime of the development of this project and enables us to look to the future and consider wider impacts, such as the positive economic benefits our project could bring to the area."

The Department of Energy and Climate Change recently granted E.ON planning permission to carry out construction work on a 230-megawatt offshore wind farm near the Holderness Coast in East Riding, which could also create new civil engineering jobs.
