Australian gas project could create civil engineering jobs

A joint venture has been appointed to undertake work related to the development of the Greater Gorgon Area gas fields, which could aid Australian civil engineering recruitment.

Clough and Sea Trucks Australia have together been awarded an A$300 million contract to undertake offshore work related to the development of the domestic gas capacity of the Gorgon fields, which are located 130km off the coast of Western Australia.

This will see them install 90km of 20-inch pipeline - offshore and onshore - from Barrow Island to the Dampier Bunbury natural gas pipeline; the project is scheduled for completion in 2012 and in the meantime could create new civil engineering jobs.

John Smith, Clough's chief executive officer, remarked: "I am pleased for our marine construction team who have put in an enormous effort over the past 15 months to secure this substantial contract which underpins backlog through the 2011/12 financial year."

The Gorgon project is one of the world's largest natural gas projects and involves construction work on a 15 million tonne per annum liquefied natural gas plant on Barrow Island and on a gas infrastructure capable of delivering 300 terajoules of gas per day to Western Australia.
