Monday 19 July 2010Mitsubishi and SSE to form offshore wind partnership
Japanese engineering giant Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and UK power generator SSE Renewables are teaming up to develop new technologies for offshore wind and low carbon vehicles.
The two companies “hope to establish joint development projects, ventures, investments and supply arrangements through this agreement".
The move seems to be designed to help Mitsubishi win turbine supply contracts for two Round III projects which SSE is participating in, the 9GW Dogger Bank zone and the 3.4GW Firth of Forth zone.
Mitsubishi is planning to develop a 6MW offshore turbine in the UK.
The Mitsubishi agreement will build on SSE’s Centre of Engineering Excellence in Renewable Energy at the University of Strathclyde, which was established in 2009, adding 100 jobs at the centre.
SSE says it is on course to create around 1,000 engineering jobs over the next five years.
The partnership will initially focus on offshore wind and low carbon vehicles, but could also develop to work on smart grid technology and carbon capture and storage, as well as “high efficiency power generation.”
“This agreement represents one of the most significant industrial partnerships to be established in Scotland since the heyday of North Sea oil,” says Colin Hood, chief operating officer of SSE.
