New head of Opito Academy

Britain's oil and gas Academy has a new lead in the shape of ex-BP staffer David Binne who has taken over as the new managing director of the industry education body run by Opito. Binnie, who recently ended his career with BP on an assignment in Abu Dhabi in the Middle East leading the development of a carbon capture and storage plant, takes up the role as head of the Academy with the aim of broadening its work internationally.

The Academy, based in Portlethen near Aberdeen, has recently formed OPITO International to deliver educational standards to improve workforce skills and capability globally. “His experience and track record in the industry will provide us with increased capability as we drive to provide the industry with a highly skilled and safe workforce now and in the future,” declared David Doig, who was recently appointed chairman of the Oil and Gas Academy after his previous role of chief executive of the organisation.

On his appointment, Binne declared that the Academy has a crucial role to play in the development of the offshore industry: “Our industry and our country face major challenges around the energy sector such as security of supply, environmental stewardship and economic health. The oil and gas industry and The Academy have a critical role to play in meeting these challenges,” he said. “The Oil & Gas Academy, clearly enhances the skills of the oil and gas workforce. We also have a key role to play in representing the industry within government and education to assure future capability.”
